The Faculty of Clinical Informatics welcomes the latest addition of Fellows

April saw the Faculty open a second application round for further Fellows to join our existing cohort and count themselves amongst the first ever members of the UK’s only organisation representing clinical informaticians in health and social care.

Nearly 100 applications were submitted by an array of professionals, ranging across doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social care and allied health professionals. All applications were reviewed by the Faculty’s Fellowship Assessment Panel, overseen by the independent chair, Professor Don Detmer, University of Virginia, (Past-President of American Medical Informatics Association).

Following ratification by the Faculty Council all applicants have been informed of the outcome, and the Faculty is pleased to report the admission of 44 new Fellows to the Faculty.

“It’s great to see the Faculty of Clinical Informatics going from strength to strength. I was impressed by the calibre of the individuals who applied; I wish them every success and I look forward to continuing to work with the Faculty in the future.” – Professor Don Detmer, Chair of the Assessment Panel

The latest intake of Fellows has increased total membership by over a third and we are looking forward to working with all Fellows as the Faculty continues to grow and develop.

“We’re all very pleased to welcome so many more talented clinical informaticians into the Faculty, as we continue to build momentum. I am extremely grateful to the Fellowship Assessment Panel and Professor Don Detmer for their dedicated assessment of the applications, and I and all my colleagues within the Faculty are looking forward to working with the new Fellows as we enter this exciting time in our development.” – Dr John Williams, Chair of the Faculty of Clinical Informatics

Recruitment of further categories of membership will take place later in 2018.

Background for Editors

The Faculty of Clinical Informatics has been established as the professional membership body for all clinical informaticians within the UK. The Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Physicians, on behalf of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, have been key in its initiation and the NHS Paperless 2020 Building a Digital Ready Workforce programme has provided supporting resources as has TPP.

The intention is for the Faculty to be inclusive, catering for the needs of all clinical informaticians who are registered with a regulatory body such as the General Medical Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council, and the Health and Care Professions Council. It has set itself objectives up to 2020 including; establishing clinical informatics as a recognised profession, developing professional standards, supporting revalidation, providing training and accreditation for individuals and courses, and supporting recruitment and careers in clinical informatics.
